Al Green: Let’s stay together.

Style: Rumba/4 beat

Difficulty: Easy/Medium

ree

I have only been asked twice to deliver wedding dance lessons to this song (one of my very first couples, and my most recent), and I forgot how good a choice it is as a first dance song.

For starters, it is a very happy song to dance to. It has a very clear and chilled-out beat which is just about fast enough, so that not only can you learn some disco-style moves, but it is also ideal for a Rumba style wedding dance.

The Rumba is a very slow, but very elegant and intimate dance style. It doesn’t need a lot of space to look good (which makes it very good for wedding dance lessons) and the various types of turns, including the spiral turn, spot turn, switch turn, and solo turns look incredible in a wedding dress (and in a nice suit!) during a first dance.

The Rumba also has a very nice body action, including a gentle hip and shoulder rocking, as well as a unique straight leg action which enhances the natural elegance of this dance style.

The hold is also more compact, and therefore more romantic and intimate, again, all good traits for wedding dance lessons.

The song also has some very nice, and very apt lyrics for a wedding dance: lines like ‘And I want to spend my life with you’ and ‘Loving you whether times are good or bad’ and the fact that the title is ‘Let’s stay together’, make it ideal as a first dance song.

The song structure is also very clear. My couples can learn a wedding dance more easily to a song like this because they know when the various parts (the verse, chorus, and interlude) are going to start and finish, meaning that they have check points during their wedding dance (Which I choreograph in during the wedding dance lessons) so they can stay on track more easily.

I’ve used this song in my adult dance classes as well, especially my Ballroom dance classes, because it always makes my dancers happy!

The lyrics can be found below…

I, I'm I'm so in love with you Whatever you want to do Is all right with me 'Cause you make me feel so brand new And I want to spend my life with you

Let me say that since, baby, since we've been together Ooh, loving you forever Is what I need Let me, be the one you come running to I'll never be untrue

Oh baby Let's, let's stay together ('gether) Lovin' you whether, whether Times are good or bad, happy or sad Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah Whether times are good or bad, happy or sad

Why, somebody, why people break up? Oh, then turn around and make up I just can't see You'd never do that to me (would you, baby?) Just being around you is all I see Here's what I want us do

Let's, we oughta stay together ('gether) Loving you whether, whether Times are good or bad, happy or sad Come on Let's, woo (let's stay together) let's stay together Loving you whether, whether times are good or bad
